Maya Angelou

I believe that the poem still I rise is about the hope and self-belief Maya Angelou had to overcome the oppression in America. she shows that even if they try to put you down you can rise.

She wrote the poem to tell black people that you can succeed not matter you situation

she repeats i rise 5 times because the more people hate her the more she will rise over them.

“Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells pumping in my living room”-the metaphor represents that she’s rich and she arrogant about it because she made it even tho everyone thought she wouldn’t.

‘shoulders falling down like tear drops’-instead of being sad and dwelling on the past, Maya Angelou has risen up over the oppression around her.

’cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines Diggin in my own backyard- she showing off her wealth and she is bragging about it.
